2019 – 61 – barista
Now,if instant coffee or powdered chocolate is not up to your high standards you can always buy a drink from our local barista. Yes, that’s right – EXCLUSIVE: prisoners are living it up knocking back cappuccinos, mochas and exotic chocolates.
Well, that’s not quite the case – whilst it’s true that we can buy a barista machine coffee and other drinks, it’s only a small percentage of prisoners – it does cost 50p, after all. That might not sound much but have 2 or 3 of these drinks each week and a prisoner’s meagre wages very quickly deplete. I’m way too careful with my money to waste it on something I can make myself with my new kettle (yay).
I did actually get a barista qualification when I first came to this prison. It was a fun course but you soon got sick of coffee. One of my most vivid and best memories was the tea/coffee morning we put on for some of the prisoners and staff – it was a serendipitous and mellifluous experience.
Be happy, be safe.
